Deploying Dexterity Customizations

Posted on by 900

So after many forum posts and trial and error, I got my Dexterity trigger working. Now I am facing deployment. I did some reading and found that I need to do three things to deploy but I got some questions

1)Create Installation scripts
I am registering the trigger on the "Startup" Procedure. Is that enough?

2)Building chunk dictionaries
Done

3)Creating an empty launch file
When I am creating my cnk file, I set the Launch File as Dyanmics.set in the Product Information and Launch ID of 0. Do I still need "an empty launch file"? If yes, what is it?

One last thing, regarding the product ID;  I read that "A product ID is obtained by registering your product with Microsoft Business Solutions. Products should be registered so they each have a unique product ID." Is this standard procedure? or is it the extreme?

Thanks for the replies in advance.

Rule of thumb is all GP application installations should have the chunk deployed. You should drop it inside the GP application folder where the dynamics.exe file resides.

Thanks for the answers. Just what I am looking for. One last question, when I am ready to deploy and have the trigger work for other users, is dropping the cnk file on the Server enough? Or do I need to place it on their local machines as well? If yes, where?

     Thanks

    1) Yes, that is what you need to do to initialize the trigger.

    3) No, I don't think you need an empty launch file. That would probably only come up if you builld your own ground up dexterity application. But if you're creating a module for GP, you don't need it.

For the product ID, that all depends on the scope of your deployment. If the target is a single system that you have full control, then you can get away with devising your own product id. Just make sure that you can assume full responsibility of ensuring it does not conflict with any deployed products and any more that you would deploy in the future. If it is a product you intend to sell, then you definitely need to go through the MBS process.
