SmartList Designer created report executes and gets hung up before I can get into the designer to modify it

I created a report in SmartList Designer. It keeps getting hung up, so I'd like to go in to modify or delete it. But every time, before I am able to open SmartList Designer, it starts to run and locks up. Stopping it doesn't work. How can I open SmartList Designer without the report being executed?
