Hello,

I am trying to set up GP where we can start remitting sales taxes to the state of New York and California but I am having problems understanding the difference between tax details and tax schedules. I know that tax schedules are the ones that appear on the customer card.

thank you for your help in advance.

That should work - then you could create schedules and just add the one detail ie Schedule id ALBANY - Details ALBANY

Thank you Dan. I have a list that combines the state tax rate plus any county or city sales tax. It is broken down by "reporting codes" so I was thinking of creating the details following this list. For instance, the tax rate for Albany county is 8%, which includes 4% of state tax and 4% of county tax. Thoughts?

Details are for setting up the taxes ie New York State sales tax at 7%.  Then you setup the local city and county taxes if applicable.  For New York I bet there is a city tax so you have NYC tax at 6% - The schedules are used to combine the details together.  Also the shipping methods determine taxes as well so you need to look at those.  Overall the process is pretty complicated so if you plan on adding more states than you may want to look at third party product which does this for GP.  Two parting comments, first setup in test company and do your testing before rolling out to live and you have to maintain the details so every time a tax changes you need to update GP.
