Customization (boolean value) will not restrict the user everywhere. Assignment of Roles & Permission is only the (Standard) way.

You can also use standard permission set available in system like "S&R-CUSTOMER", "INVT-ITEM/BOM" etc.

Basically, you can either setup user permissions the way user will have only read access to the corresponding cards. Or, you can make a small customization and add a Boolean field to the user setup, and verify OnModify trigger if the user has right to change the data on those cards or not.

Simply create new roles for master tables, add standard role (ALL) and should work seamlessly.

    Do not give super rights.

    Hi,

Ideally you would be creating permission sets, and assigning to the user. (Assumed that users aren't having SUPER role)

In your case, you have to assign read permission to the TableData of Customer and Item Tables, and then assign it to the users.

Let us know if you have any specific helps.

    Hope it helps.
