GP 18.3 email config change - SMTP?

we're currently using "MAPI" to send email out of our GP server, and it's been a persistent headache for one reason or another. I'd prefer to use a bulk email service with simple SMTP variables on the "Exchange" option to simplify that process.

Recent research shows me that Microsofts documentation generally says this is not supported, but i see a plethora of messages in user land that explain they've been doing it for quite some time with no problems. All of the real problem reports from sites using the "Exchange" option were using it with O365, and this started failing when they turned off TLS 1.1 last year.

Can you offer your take on this idea?
