As an x++ technical devloper using visual studio TFVC. From where shall i start with AI?

 

Chatgpt? (Already using it for asking questions outside the VM like everyone)

Claude?

Codex?

Copilot?

 

And an example of how to use each one please

    You should start with a use case. What exactly do you want to achieve with AI? Will it save you time? Is it worth the spend? If you can clarify your goal, we can guide you on how to start.

    Hi André,

     

    It's just i feel left out and i want to be up to date and start using and exploring the tools.

     

    When shall i use each one of the tools mentioned above? And in what case?

    what X++ support do they have, and what are the security implications?

     

    Regarding use case, maybe I want AI to understand the code I'm currently working on without constantly copying classes out of Visual Studio. I want AI to review my X++ code and point out possible bugs or performance issues.

    I want AI to analyze an error/stack trace and help me find the cause.

    I want AI to help me understand unfamiliar standard D365FO code faster.

    I want AI inside Visual Studio to suggest/complete code while I'm developing.

    I want AI to investigate X++ bugs with enough access to my D365FO codebase/AOT to follow dependencies across classes, tables and extensions.

    I want AI to help in repetitive development work..etc

    I have tested the X++ capabilities of some of the AI that you mentioned above and I was disappointed by the answers given.  You simply cannot rely on the answers given by AI as 100% correct. You always have to verify the answers. 

     

    However, AI can help with basic stuff but F&O is really tricky for AI to “understand” that you just created a bug in your code, unless it's a syntax error or something like that. Most of the time that really difficult bugs only become obvious after thoroughly being tested in a test environment.

     

    I am using quotation marks because AI cannot understand like humans do. It uses a model and can only provide you with feedback based on what it has been trained on in the model. So, if the AI has not been fully trained on certain topics, like X++, it simply can't help you properly and will give you garbage answers. In fact, you will probably end up with more bugs in your code if you use AI and fully trust the answers.

    How about exploring GitHub co-pilot, its have a lot of inbuilt capability for X++ development.

    Hi @DELDYN ,

    As a D365 F&O technical consultant I think should consider learning all about Copilot and how to create AI agents in Co Pilot studio. You need to start learning about MCP (Model Context Protocol) and how to use Model Context Protocol connector for D365 F&O for your AI agent you will create in Copilot studio. 

    Since the release of Dynamics 365 F&O Version 10.0.46 we have seen Microsoft has remade the entire ecosystem around AI Agents. Even on home page you will see the list of AI Agents. 

    So this will be the right direction to move in.
