Management Reporter 2012 RU3

Posted on by 275

Hello,

I understand that there is a Web Viewer which comes with MR 2012 RU3 but that there is no security built into this product; it is unable to secure reports by roles etc.

What I'm wondering is, if the reports are not security trimmed, are we at least able to generate only certain reports we want to share to the web viewer? Or is the Web Viewer simply a web veiw of MR's Report Viewer? For example we would generate the Expense reports to the Web Viewer but the Payroll reports we would keep security trimmed int the Reports Viewer. Possible?

And if we can generate only certain reports to the report viewer can we choose who we want to have access to the web viewer?

Thank you,

Andrea

    Andrea,

A user's security is enforced the same way whether they are accessing the report via the report viewer or the web viewer.  If they choose to view the report via a link on a SharePoint site, their security priveledges will be validated when they open the link, and they will only see the data they have rights to see.  The report will open in one of the supported browsers.  The only reason the desktop viewer would be required for those choosing to view reports via a SharePoint library (and the web viewer) would be to then open the report to take advantage of other features not yet available in the web viewer (such as creating a chart on the report).

The short answer is: the web viewer is, in fact, role based in exactly the same way the regular report viewer is.  There is also no additional install for those consumers of the web viewer reports.  They just need a browser that can hit the location of the link of the report (SharePoint or other share location).

    Hope that helps.  Kind Regards,

    Jeff

Yes, I understand the Report Designer and Report Viewer's security on the client apps. And I have SharePoint configured. The SharePoint library is not a solution for accessing web based reports (as we could in Frx Web) since SharePoint only holds the Link to the report. In order to open the Link you must have the client app on your workstation. Again not  web based access unless your logged onto your desktop..

My question is about Web Viewer, available in MR 2012 RU3. Just released in Nov. 2012. I understand it is not role based? And additional info about how this works would be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Andrea

    Hi Char,

Thank You very much for this quick clarification about the web viewer security... that will save me quite a bit time when it will come to try this feature out on our server :-).

    Happy Christmas,

    Re: Management Reporter 2012 RU3

Just wanted to let you know that there is security on the reports in the Management Reporter web viewer. There are actually two ways you can secure the reports.

First, each file used in the web viewer is a link file that verifies the user has the correct security before the file is opened in the viewer. This security is based upon access defined in Management Reporter. This video will tell you more:  blogs.msdn.com/.../creating-secure-report-links-management-reporter-2012-feature-highlight.aspx

In addition, when you publish these link files to SharePoint, you can set security on the SharePoint list or on the file itself, if you want to, using the SharePoint security. This provides a 2nd level of security if you need it. ALso note that the same file can be published to several SharePoint sites, as needed, based upon where users are used to finding their reports.

    Hi Andrea,

I've not installed yet the RU3, but why would you use a Web Viewer when the Report viewer is free to use and deploy ? The Report Viewer lets you set full security on the published reports, so you don't run a risk of letting sensitive data flow across the network...

Is the Web viewer client using SSL ? otherwise I would just plain not trust it :-), anyone could sniff your network and capture the data.. .

PS : it's funny that you thought about using MR 2012 to generate Payroll reports ... how many employees do you have ?
