Agreed K Day,
Dyn_GP... Play the 'can you put that in writing' game...ask them to email your Boss just to tell him/her that they won't give you the sa password...tends to focus minds!
I never understand people being so cagey about passwords...If security is a real issue, then they can sit with you while you work...and change the password afterwards...but their job is to support the business, not put stumbling blocks in the way of those trying to use the technology.
Sorry, I don't think there is anything else we can do for you. You need the sa password. I don't see any way around it.
i would still need help.
DYSAN doesn't work... assigned sysadmin.
IT won't give out password for sa.

thanks for your suggestion, i might give it a try on asking the sa password then change when done, as well as trying to get DYNSA's password.
can the sysadmin role removed from sa? since GP is using sa as an appl user, not a system administrator to backup stuff and change File group and etc.
you are the most inline with the thinking on permissions. DYNSA user is the dbo on all databases here. i don't understand why GP's tool will ask for 'sa'. i went back to microsoft.com/sql site. it still suggest to avoid using sa because of virus, liked code red and etc. funny is MS GP has tool that requires using sa...
in fact, it is recommanded and in sql05 mstc exam to do EXECUTE AS in stored proc and grant EXECUTE permission to dbuser.
i find it speechless that GP, a microsoft product using sql05, still breaking the norm to use sa and asking for sa password...
I might be getting in over my head, but I don't understand why the GP sa account is getting disabled. The sa is a very important login for GP (as you are seeing right now). I am almost guessing that part of the stored procedure that is being called when you do things like Modifier (PSTL), like you are using, (or another example would be configuring Analytical Accounting), is that the first thing it looks at is "Is the user SA." If not, give the message "You must be logged in as SA to perform this task." Regardless of the rights that the user has. It is probably just a check because you know sa has rights to do everything and you don't have to worry about getting halfway through modifying your salespeople, and then they system figures out that the standard user doesn't have access to one particular procedure or window that it needs.
I have in the past marked my GP user ID as "sysadmin" in SQL and then was able to do some things in GP otherwise reserved for the sa account, like creating, deleting, and changing passwords for users.
There is also a user called DYNSA with is the database owner. If you have that password, you might be able to try that.
Can you just ask them for the sa password and then have them change it to something else after you are done?
good idea, but, we are in different buildings 41 miles apart.
the kicker is i can't find what those prog is trying to do with 'sa', which is an account disabled by Microsoft SQL by default on Win authenication installs.
is there any other ideas?
Can't you have them just type it in for you then? Sounds pretty silly to me if you need it to do your work.
I'm pretty sure the things that say you have to be logged in as SA for, you really need to be SA, not just have sysadmin rights.
does the sa have to have sysadmin to work? let's look at it, the Salesperson Modifier is to update content, liked select, insert, and update.
so, can't it have just database role with read, write and execute?
If IT won't give you the password then I'm afraid your stuck. I don't think anyone will post here on how to crack the sa password. Sorry about that.
