Address XML mapping seems to defy logic? i.e. ShipToAddr1, ShipToAddr2 (etc)

Does anyone know a bit more on the logic of the XML data on addresses for reports as it just uses line1, line2, line 3 etc and you have no control on what data goes in? i.e. 

  • ShipToAddr1 (Name)

  • ShipToAddr2 (Contact)

  • ShipToAddr3 (Address)

  • ShipToAddr4 (Address 2)

  • ShipToAddr5 (City)

  • ShipToAddr6 (Postcode)

  • ShipToAddr7 (Address [from account])

  • ShipToAddr8 (Country Region Code [from account])

I guess the simple answer is to remove 7 & 8 but if i get a longer/shorter address it'll either still add wrong info or drop the postcode?

Is there any way to explicitly just add "Address" "Address 2" "City" "Postcode" as it makes no sense to do it like that as you cannot control the data you want to appear?

    Well it depends on the kind of address and country. This is something you can setup in the Countries table/page:

    When the report generates the dataset, there's code that formats the addresses using the codeunit "Format Address":

    So simply changing the layout and removing certain fields will have different results depending on the country the customer is from.
