Archiving GP2015 Data

Posted on by 364
This is a longshot.  The customer wants to decommission their SQL 2012 Server, but they have 30-40 databases on it. At first wanted to export all their data from each DB to Excel so that could still use it foe archiving but that would make it really difficult to read.  Then they thought about backing up all the databases and moving to a different server but since it is GP2015 they could only go to SQL 2014 server.  Is there any way to export the data so they would not need a database to access it, other than Excel.  Something that would be easy to read?

    Hello,

GP 2015 isn't support above SQL 2014 but it does work on newer versions.  If you are just going to host the databases without attaching GP to them, you could use a number of tools to run reports against the data.  If you want to get GP working on a version of SQL above 2014 you can utilize the dex.ini switches on David Musgrave's blog found here.  How to bypass SQL Version Errors from Dynamics GP Utilities | Winthrop Development Consultants Blog (wordpress.com)

The switches will allow you to get by the SQL checks in GP Utilities.

    Hi sdcraig,

Unfortunately reading SQL backups using Excel is simply not possible. However, even though GP 2015 requires SQL 2014 or lower, you can still restore those databases to a later version of SQL. You just wouldn't be able to use a GP 2015 client to make it through GP Utilities if SQL 2016 or higher although there are ways around that even:

You could hypothetically determine what all you want to export from these databases (GL accounts, GL transactions, subledger transactions) and then export all of that to Excel. This would be a bit unwieldy and involved. I think it'd be best to just have these database backups available to be read if needed and if needed, then restore SQL (version doesn't matter) and use the option in above link to get into the GP UI if you need to get into the UI.

Let me know if any questions.

    Thanks,
