Production Work Creation Behavior with Missing Inventory

Hi Experts

During our discrete implementation, we are using Resource consumption in the BOM and have defined locations on resources so that, when a production order is released, the system automatically creates warehouse work (pick and put).

We have observed the following behavior:

  • When sufficient inventory is available, the system correctly creates the pick and put work with proper pick and put locations.

  • However, when inventory is not available for a BOM line, the system still creates the work order, but the pick location remains blank.

  • In this case, no error or warning message appears during production order release — the work gets created successfully but is incomplete and cannot be processed by warehouse users.

We would like to clarify the following points:

  1. Is this standard system behavior when using Resource consumption and location-directed work creation?

  2. Can the system be configured (through parameters or setup) to stop work creation or raise an error/warning if inventory is not available at the time of release?

  3. Is there any recommended best practice (such as enabling Require full reservation before release, using material availability check, or modifying work template queries) to prevent creation of work with blank pick locations?

  4. How can the system inform or alert users (e.g., production planner or warehouse supervisor) when:

    • A production order is released with missing inventory, or

    • Work is created with blank or invalid pick locations? Examples: system message, alert or batch job notification

  5. If no standard alert exists, what would be the recommended approach (customization, Power Automate flow, or alert rule) to automatically inform users in such scenarios?

  6.

    Hi Shubam,
Warehouse work creation requires reservation which, in turn, requires inventory.  So if you have work, you have inventory its just not in a location where you allow picking to be performed.  If you go to the Production BOM line and look at Inventory > Reservation you will see that there is 50 ea physically reserved

    So:
    1) You have a Location Directive Failure policy (navigate to that screen to confirm) that allow work for RM picking when location directives fail to find an appropriate location. That explains why work is being created with no InfoLog warning that 'No work was created.

    2) Take a look at your inventory for that item and find out where it is stocked.  Is it in a location where you allow picking?

    3) Take a close look at the location directives for Raw Material work type for that warehouse. There is a constraint preventing the location where item is currently stocked to be used for work creation.

    4) As for best practice for reservation, it really depends on what you want to achieve. I would say that preference is 50/50 for companies that want to start even if they dont have all BOM lines.
