New entity or Customize the existing entity .. ?

Posted on by 130

As part of implementing Dynamics CRM, I need an entity, Which has some fields from Account entity and some new and business specific fields. What is best approach -

  1. Creating a new Entity from scratch?
  2. Renaming the account entity and then use existing and add new fields to it?
  3. Any better approach than either of these?

I am beginner in Dynamics CRM so any pointer to similar example will be great help.

    Hi Atul,

Once you have renamed account to something else, it will be visible to all users of that organization/instance by the same name. it does not depends on Business Unit.

Saad is right in a way but you can still use it by creating an option set field (Type) on account entity and based on that you can create multiple forms. Be aware that you can enable security role feature on forms and allow/restrict users to see it.

    Hope it helps !

Hi Saad, Thank you very much for your reply.

I have another doubt from your reply- "You are sure you will not need account entity in future then use account entity"

Can't it use Account after Renaming to Vendor or something, for other Business Unit, Same Instance?

    Again Thanks in advance

In Addition to Prashant's suggest, If most of the functionalities are covered by account entity and you are sure you will not need account entity in future then use account entity. Otherwise create a new custom entity

    Hi Atul,

it entirely depends on what features are required on the new entity.

So, if its an entity having fields and enabled for email, you can create a custom entity.

But, if this entity requires, opportunities, cases, orders, invoices, quotes, contacts etc. to be associated with it, you must use accounts.

An account is primarily used as an organization/company in CRM, to whom we serve or sell.

let me know, if you have any further questions.

    Here is what I suggest

Choose a custom entity and then add a look up that allows you to associate your custom entity with an existing entity "Account"
