Management Reporter Server Migration

Posted on by 1,930

We need to migrate Management reporter from one server to another server.  Is there any documentation on it?

I found an old document prepared by Greg Buyer which was helpful.

But what I not understand about that document what is the purpose of the following  tasks

a.  Under the Company menu, click Building Block Groups.

b.  Select the building block group to export.

c.  Click Export.as listed in the documentation.

The document does not mention to import  building blocks into the new serer.

Again below is this is  just a small part of the migration instructions.

Thanks

a.  Under the Company menu, click Building Block Groups.

b.  Select the building block group to export.

c.  Click Export.

That is correct.  Exporting the building blocks before starting the migration is an insurance policy in case something were to go wrong.  That way you'd still have your report definitions.

Greg - appreciate your response.  So if I understand this correctly.

If the migration described in the article which includes scripts  is successful  then all the reports including security will be migrated. No need to import the building blocks to the new server.

If the migration described in the article which includes scripts is NOT successful and/or is not worth troubleshooting, then import the building blocks and but will need to re-setup the users and security.

    Thanks

    RE: Management Reporter Server Migration

You'll want to follow the steps in the blog below, for migrating the MR database to a new server.

The reason for exporting your building blocks is in case of failure.  You could also export/import the building blocks instead of migrating the MR database.  In that case, you'd just do a new install of MR on the new server and then import the building blocks.  The downside of this is that you'll lose your MR security and any historical report versions in your Report Library.  But if you only have a few users and don't need your historical report versions, the export/import method may be easier.
