Dynamics GP 2013 Installation: Test Environment

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

We are planning to install a test environment for Dynamics GP 2013 including:

  1. Dynamics GP Application
  2. Dynamics GP Web services including workflow and business portal
  3. Dynamics GP web client

As a result, we are planning to allocate 3 servers to host the above 3 major components taking into consideration the system requirements documentation released by Microsoft.

Moreover, is it possible to have all the above on one server only? Should there be any technical issues?

Thank you.

Then to get things cleared, you will not need Business Portal installed.

You are absolutely on the right track.

    Keep us posted,

    Hi,

What  I am planning to do is the following:

    1. Allocate a virtual machine to host all features of Dynamics GP including the SQL Server DB. (High specifications)
    2. Use the live domain controller
    3. Install Dynamics GP 2013 R2 components.

The reason behind this installation is to test the requisition feature with the purchasing cycle workflow.

I will update this thread after the installation is done.

It is possible. Although, I am sure you will need to get consider a virtual machine as part of your plan on this server.

You will need a domain controller, database server, and application server. I believe you may consider the following suggestion:

    • Windows server 2008 or 2012
    • Virtual machine to host the domain controller
    • On the local server, you can get Dynamics GP 2013 R2, database server.

Business portal requires SharePoint serve/ foundation, which consumes a massive portion of your memory. Since you are looking for testing, you may consider the most recent Dynamics GP 2013 R2, which has a complete built-in workflow engine with no need for business portal. So it depends on what's the purpose of the test.

Additionally, the more you go with the specifications of the server, the more smooth your test will be

    Your feedback is highly appreciated,

    Joseph,

You can install all of the above mentioned application in single server (Test Server). But, I would not suggest you to install the same in single live server. Better you can contact your partner to get the assistance for the same.

    Hope this helps!!!

Please add this too (for anyone who has upgraded or is upgrading) - I am proposing a robust (at least) month-long parallel test that includes a payroll run. I would guess this type of activity is standard when upgrading? At any rates, this is a great thread to address not only JMA Nader's technical questions, but overall "upgrade experience" questions too. Thanks in advance!

How fortuitous! I was getting ready to post a similar question. I am also starting to plan for a GP2013 R2 release for the fall. For whoever it is that answers this, please add this to the list: we have heard that certain business functions that we are currently choosing to do through Business Portal (Purchase Request Workflow, Timecard Entry, Vacation Requests and such) might be better done in GP2013 R2 proper. How does this impact licenses, etc. and are there benefits and/or risks to migrating our users off Business Portal for these functions. Add this too: I am still seeking bids for Best-In-Class training (meaning: someone who comes in with pre-prepared course material and a ready-made training environment).
