Thanks Barry for your comments. This is helpful but I am trying to gather little more info.
I am trying to find the list of open periods that havent been closed yet.
Let say when a user create a new batch, Per to Post is defaulted to the current default Period. Can a user create a batch in a period other than default period? If so, how can we find the open periods?

GLSetUp specifies how many periods there are in a year, and the ending dates orf each.
The various modules are not necessarily always in the same Period.
For eaxmple AR might be in 02-2012 but AP might still be in 01-2012.
So each module's SetUp record generally has two "period" fields.
My memory is a bit eough around edges, but I think one of those Periods is usually trhe current default Period used for new batches.
And the other is the last Period successfully Closed Into.
My vague memory is also that the GL Module may behave slightly differently from the other Modules in this regard.
