Business Central - Expected Cost

Hello,

It was widely advertised that BC would bring all NAV functionality.

I notice that there is no option still to turn on/off Expected Cost and Automatic Cost Posting.

Or is the setting now somewhere else?

Thanks,

Julien

The field belongs to the Application Area "Advanced". This area turned off in BC so the field will not show. This may be related to the licensing, but I am not sure. My concern is if this is by default true or false. As with the Automatic Cost Posting field.

Business Central and Dynamics NAV still differs in UI (and therefore out-of-the box capabilities).

    See info here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/across-faq

     - in the section "Why are some UI elements that I used in Dynamics NAV not visible in Business Central?"

    Hello Brian,

    Thanks for this.

Looking at documentation, these are the only premium functuionalities:

    Functionality.png

No mention of ACP and EC.

Looking at the link you shared, this is what is claimed:

"In Business Central, the Application Areas system and the Experience options enable you to show/hide relevant parts of the product according to the purchased plan (Essential or Premium) and according to your business needs.

These capabilities have been used to simplify the UI in the standard version of Business Central."

First of all, there is no mention of expected cost or automatic cost posting in the comparison between essential and premium.

Secondly, even if it was the case that those features were only part of the premium package, why are the fields in the general posting setup for stock interim and cogs interim not been removed then, for the sake of simplifying the UI, since the expected costs functionality does not work at all at the moment, let alone be able to turned on or off?

None of the answers I find are particularly satifactory.

    Thanks,

    Julien

I have a demo site turned on to premium and expected cost is not on the inventory setup page either.

I can now see Expected Cost posting on the Inventory Setup page (Premium Experience) but still nothing on Automatic Cost Posting.

Clearly new features are being added all the time which is good, but I do have concerns that it's all undocumented! Would love to see a roadmap of when things like Automatic Cost Posting are due to be released. I noticed also today I can't see Value Entries, another thing that'd be helpful to see.

    Hi Steve and friends,

While you can wait for Microsoft to add the field to the Inventory Setup page, you don't need to. You can add it to the page today by going to the Sandbox, and then using Settings (the gear icon) and clicking on Designer while on the Inventory Setup page.

Here, you will find the option to add fields (+Field), and in the field list that appears to your right, you will find the Automatic Cost Posting option.

Note: You have to be in the Sandbox > Designer; this field is not visible from the Personalize option.

After adding the field, click Stop Designing, save it as an Extension and be sure click the box that allows you to download it. The zip file that you download must be opened in Visual Studio Code (make sure to have the AL extension installed), you must download symbols, and then compile it to get the .app package. Sounds like a lot of steps, but once you have Visual Studio Code and AL installed, and you've done this a couple times, it just takes a few minutes.

The .app file can be uploaded from the Extensions page in your production environment; it will validate in a few minutes and then be available to use.

The code behind this field is already in place - it was just the field that was left off the setup page by default.

I hope this helps. If my response has answered your question, please verify by clicking Yes next to "Did this answer your question?"

Hi AJ, this is really helpful, thank you. It's not quite clear why these fields are left off and it's not very efficient to have to deal with similar situations in this way, but it's good to know there's a workable solution.

I have another suggestion for changing this setting without having to go to the sandbox.  This table is available in Configuration Packages.  If you add it to a config package and export the table to excel, you can edit the setting and bring it back in.

And it is enabled by default (or at least it was) when a company is created using the Standard Data option.
