Restore Backup and Remove Big Erroneous GL Integration

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

If yesterday, we had a very large integration of over 30,000 rows into GL is it possible to restore to the night before backup and put the GL entries from yesterday back in?  Each JE# is only 1 debit and 1 credit but we can smartlist.

Thank You...yes only nightly....however i can smartlist and integrate anything except modules...again Thank You this was very helpful....we may change our procedure on integration....like backup before this huge integration and have everyone out of the system.

    Chase,

Without seeing the whole picture on your backup strategy it is diffult to say for sure what options you have. If you only backup nightly and not throughout the day then you may have to repeat that work or integrate it.

If you find out that you are in fact only backing up nightly I would suggest to change that going forward as well so that you reduce the amount of the data that you may potentially loose in the event of an issue like this. The SQL Server backup strategies can be pretty detailed so it is definitely worth taking the time to plan it out.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

We would love to restore without rekeying anything and believe backups are nightly.  There is a time on the SQL....Our Microsoft Partner stated the reason we see 0:00 on anytime in the database is because "microsoft made an error and didn't include it."

    Chase,

As Richard mentioned if you restore that backup from the day before then yes, you will loose other work done yesterday and basically the work would have to be repeated or integrated. So, the decision in this case is whichever is the best option for what you want.

It may also help to know what you are trying to fix by restoring that backup from the other day. Perhaps it is easier to fix that issue than to restore and repeat the work?

Also, I am not sure what your backup strategy is but depending on what version of SQL Server you have you can get down to a point in time restore so it may be worth looking at that as well to see if you can reduce the amount of lost time.

    Thanks,

    Adam

Ok,,,,there is no edit available in the backup i guess.  We would have to smartlist all entries and delete the bad rows,,,,integrate the remaining with JE#s assigned maybe.....but do the modules come with the backup absolutely or guess there's no choice to upload just GL?  We would have to integrate all the accounts payable and fixed asset module TRXs from yesterday.

It's amazing our 80s legacy system still has some advantages yet it may be less secure though.

    Hi Chase,

If you have to restore the backup to a point in time before the large GL entry was loaded into GP I would suggest the following steps:

    1. Verify you have your desired live backup that you want to restore ready to go. I'll call this "Backup1"
    2. Run a new backup now so you have a backup that includes the GL entry. I'll call this "Backup2"
    3. Restore "Backup2" to a new database
    4. Restore your live system using "Backup1" and verify that your live system is now ready to go.
    5. With the second database which you created from "Backup2" as the source of the data, use integration manager or similar tool to pull the GL entries you want back into the live database as unposted transactions and then post them again.

This way you don't have to re-key the transaction and the GL Integration is relatively simple so you can import those transactions and recreate the journal entry and then still let GP post it for you.

Let me know if this helps.

    Thanks,
    Adam

If you restore from backup you will lose whatever else work you did yesterday. If this was the only thing done then by all means restore from backup.
