Easy was to configure DYNAMICS.SET?

Posted on by 2

Hi,

I'm trying to created a scaled down version of my .set file in order to troubleshoot some performance issues.  We've got 57 entries in our .set, so as you can imagine, removing one by one gets very tedious.  Is there a tool available where I could customize my set file?  I've tried building something in excel to auto populate, but I think that's causing more frustration.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Jim

    Hi Jim

You might need to run as administrator to get permissions.

The window does check it has write access to the application folder, but maybe that's not in Build 17.

You should update to Build 19 as there were lots of improvements. In the almost 2 years between Build 17 and Build 19.

The SDT replacement, GP Power Tools, is coming soon and lots of improvements and new features.

    David,

I'm having an issue with the dictionary control.  I have my custom set file (dynamics_jim.set), launch GP via that SET, then in SDT I delete the products I need to remove.  I get the expected messages when I click Apply.  However, my SET file is not updated (after logging out), no is a backup file created as expected.  Are there any caveats to this function in SDT?

    We're on GP 2013 sp2 and SDT 10.00.0017.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jim

Vaidy is correct, it works with the Launch file currently in use.  It does not have to be named DYNAMICS.SET.

If I remember it correctly, it takes the SET file using which we log on to GP. So changes made to that SET file would remain on that file.

David may correct me, if I am wrong. It's been a while since I had done this particular exercise.

David, If I use a different set file such as DYNAMICS_JIM.SET, will the dictionary control update that file or the DYNAMICS.SET file?

Thanks David!  I use the SDT quiet frequently but I seem to have missed this!

I am working on the rebranded tool as we speak.

You will love the enhancements that are coming when it is released for GP 2010, GP 2013 and GP 2015.

    Hi David,

I 100% agree with you, there is no doubt that the Support Debugging Tool is a much better tool than the Customization Status. It does not only offer control over GP products but also a collection of great tools.

I am looking forward for the Support Debugging Tool for GP 2015!

Thanks Mr. David for giving such a clear differentiation between the Dictionary Control and the Customization status.

RE: Easy was to configure DYNAMICS.SET?

    Hi Jorge

Now you have made me justify why Dictionary Control is better than Customisation Status.

Dictionary Control can remember the settings between sessions, so you can exit GP and come back and the product will still be disabled. Customisation Status is for the current session only and has no memory.

Dictionary Control can also disable modified, alternate and modified alternate windows to restore the original window WITHOUT actually changing the security settings.

Dictionary Control can also disable Visual Basic for Applications code and Visual Studio Tools Addins.

So yes, you can use Customisation Status, but there is something much better.

Also the Support Debugging Tool for GP 2010 and GP 2013 is still free of charge.

    David
