Hi,
Is there a way to specify brand on items in AX 2012?
Also is there a way to specify division - appliances, clothing, lawn and garden, etc...?

You can look at the inventory dimensions or seek a customisation to add this grouping structure to your items within AX.
For the brand you need indeed a workaround (use an available field) or customization. There is no standard field with this information. It is quite often asked by end users. I don't prefer the option to use an inventory dimension because it will be part of every inventory transaction.
Usually I propose to have a new table with a new field on the products.
Using the category hierarchies, you can maintain and link the divisions.
