Able to change item model group/ storage dimension group/tracking dimension group of an item

I was able to change item model group/storage dimension group/tracking dimension group of an item even though open transactions and on hand exists for an item and the inventory didn't closed yet. May I know the reason behind it. And we are using weighted average inventory model in which the average unit cost is not coming for the transactions of an item. How to troubleshoot and solve this ?

That makes sense. It's easy to change from/to Weighted Average (and LIFO/FIFO if I'm not mistaken) to other groups, but not necessarily the other way around.
The reasoning behind, as I understand and can read from the code, is that that pricing principle is not settling issues against receipts but rather the average value of the inventory. Here are the docs: Weighted average with physical value and marking - Supply Chain Management | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn

If you tried to do with Std. Cost or Moving Average, it will complain about on-hand and inventory cost not being zero.

    Hi CU12061712-0,

Item model groups shouldn't be changed with existing open transactions and on-hand inventory for the product. The Item model group is directly proportional to tracking the inventory of the product and does impact components like unit costs and dimensions associated with the product/item.

Reasons for not being able to see the transaction:
    1. The link between the InventTransID and the Product Id with reference to the Item Model Group Id is broken.
    2. The link between on-hand inventory used to track the stock of the product and the associated open transactions is broken.

If there are no open transactions associated with the new Item model then would recommend you to do the following:
    1. Through a X++ script go ahead and close the open inventory transactions associated with the old Item Model group. Also, check for the product dimensions, storage and tracking dimensions associated with the product.
    2. Once the new item model groups are added, check the on-hand inventory after adding the new item model group.

Hope this helps. Happy to answer questions, if any.

    Good day,

That’s remarkable. What are the differences between the old and new item model group, storage dimension group, and tracking dimension group? Regarding the transactions, are the products receipts and invoices posted?

    Best regards,
    Laurens
