We have Dynamics POS installed on our server 2008. Everything is setup under the WORKGROUP name for now, not doing domain users yet. I have a login name on the register PC, and also the identical name and password on the server. When I install POS on the resgister PC and type in the name on the server to use that database, i get the to compete this operation you must be logged on to this computer using an account that is and administratior on both this computer and on the database computer. both accounts have administrator access. I am physically logged on the server with the account, as well as the register PC. Could someone help us out or give a little direction? Thanks so much!

    Re: Dynamics POS database and register PC help

    The problem lies in the fact that you are using separate user accounts for server and client. If not a member of a domain accounts are stored in the SAM database on the local machine (ie not centralised). Even though you name the accounts the same (eg administrator) they are NOT equivalent.

    If machine1 tries to authenticate a user it checks the SAM database on machine1 (ie users & groups), it has no knowledge of accounts on other machines.

    Two possible ways of fixing this;

    1) Use a centralised domain account that is either a member of the domain admins group, or added to the local Administrators group on each machine (preferred for security reasons).

    2) If both are members of the same workgroup add the account from one machine into the local Administrators group on the other (ie add machine1\user to the machine2 Administrors group and vice versa).

     Hope this helps

    Thank You,

    I have three pc's running windows xp Pro sp3, and the server machine is named "Backoffice" and when i try to point the database to that computer i get the error above. all three have two users on them, Administrator, and POS. POS is a Admin on all computers. I hope this helps to get more information.

    Re: Re: Dynamics POS database and register PC help

    I tried to do that on both systems no luck. I ran the server program as administrator, but logged on as our user name that has administrator settings. On the register PC same thing using a matching name and password, ran program as administrator. I also turned the windows firewall off on both systems.

     On the server under SQL server configuration manager the MSPOSINSTANCE is running as localsystem, is that ok or should it be running as that same user account we have setup or something.

    Also when I run the setup on the server, choose to use a database on another PC, I just am putting the server name, tried just the name, the IP address, also \\server name everything. It is showing the port as 1976 and the instance name as MSPOSInstance. When I click ok it seems to bomb right away. I am remote desktoped into the server and can ping it and everything so I have connection to it. I feel like I have tried everything possible. I even reinstalled bother server and register PC. The register PC is running Windows 7 professional and the server is 2008 server enterprise. Hope that is enough information. The only way we can use it so far is to remote desktop into the server and run it that way. Not the best way to run it for us as you can imagine.

    Run the install program using "Run as Administrator" feature to elevate the security of the install program. This one took me around the block a couple of times too. Best Regards, Max Pollard POS Specialist Alembic Point of Sale 303-903-8264
