Product Master Predefined Variant on Sales Order

Hi-

We have our items set up as Product Masters with Predefined Variants (using Configuration variant). We would like to use different configurations for an item that is produced for a sales order (part sales configuration) verses the same item that is produced for a parent production order (standard configuration). We have the default configuration set to the standard configuration and would like the sales order to populate with the part sales configuration automatically.  We have tried using the Alternative Product (set to the part sales configuration) under the sell tab to no avail. We are using AX 2012 R2.

Any other suggestions?

    The configuration which is required for a parent production order is defined on the parent item's BOM line for the component, so I would suggest that you set the default configuration to the sales configuration (to make it easy for the sales staff) and then when you create a bill of material line for the item update the configuration on the BOM line (the engineers should be able to cope with that). You'll track the two configurations in and out of inventory separately, effectively as if they were separate item numbers.
