I am new to Dynamics NAV, but we have a customer asking about whether the Dynamics NAV ITEM and BOM can be updated through either Dynamics NAV API or its web service.
I think here is the best place to get an answer for it.

there is no dynamics nav api, but you can use web services (soap or odata). other ways are using xmlports or rapid services (data exchange via excel docs).
web services:
simple solution: you can publish the page item card as nav web service (its a .net soap web service then) and use it for accesing/modifying items. for bom publish page "Production BOM List".
better/advanced solution: develope your own codeunit for accessing items and boms. advantage: only your defined functionality is published. its also the more secure solution. if you can't do that your nav partner will assist.
