Recurring Billing - Need to Redo and Adjust Next Billing Date

In Business Central Recurring Billing, I generated an invoice for a customer but then realized that it included an error. To remedy, I deleted the invoice that was not yet posted and corrected the subscription lines. Now, though, the issue is that the Next Billing Date is set to the following month. How do I modify the Next Billing Date? We bill a month in advance so this is the 6/1 invoice billing for 7/1 to 7/31 that needs regenerated.

Thank you!
*New to recurring billing in May and still getting the hang of it!!

I would go back to the Recurring Billing page, use Delete Documents and/or Clear Billing Proposal for that billing line, correct the subscription line, then run Create Billing Proposal again with the correct Billing Date and Billing to Date. Microsoft documentation states that when a billing proposal is created, the Next Billing Date is updated, and if the billing line is deleted or the billing period is changed, the Next Billing Date should be reset automatically.

Also check whether the billing proposal line shows Update Required after changing the subscription line. If yes, use Refresh or Create Billing Proposal again before creating the invoice. If the Next Billing Date remains 8/1/2026, check for any remaining billing proposal/document reference for the 7/1–7/31 period.

Hi, do not edit the Next Billing Date by hand on the contract line, you do not really need to and it can throw the line out of sync.
Deleting the invoice was only half of it, the billing proposal line for that period is still sitting on the Recurring Billing page. The Next Billing Date moved forward the moment that proposal got created, not when you post.

So open Recurring Billing, find the leftover line for that contract, and use Clear Billing Proposal or Delete Billing Line. Per the docs, once the billing line is removed BC reset the Next Billing Date back automatically based on the period. Then run Create Billing Proposal again with your billing date for the 7/1 to 7/31 run and it should come back.

Glad to help - follow up if anything is unclear.

    Hello,
When you delete an unposted recurring billing invoice, Business Central does not automatically roll back the Next Billing Date; Microsoft says the billing lines remain on the Recurring Billing page after deleting the invoice, so you should go back to Recurring Billing, delete/refresh the affected billing proposal lines if needed, correct the subscription/contract line, then create the billing proposal again using the correct Billing Date / Billing to Date so the period is picked up again. The Next Billing Date drives whether the line is included, so if it already moved to 8/1/2026, you may need to manually adjust it back on the subscription/contract line if the field is editable, or recreate/update the billing proposal from the recurring billing page instead of only deleting the sales invoice.

    Hello,

In Business Central Recurring Billing, deleting an unposted invoice after it has been generated does not automatically reset the Next Billing Date, as the billing process may have already advanced the subscription's billing schedule.

After correcting the subscription lines, the user needs to determine the appropriate method for adjusting the Next Billing Date back to the original billing period so the invoice can be regenerated for the same billing cycle (e.g., an invoice created on 6/1 for services covering 7/1–7/31).

The solution typically involves reviewing and updating the subscription or contract billing dates to ensure the missed billing period can be invoiced again without disrupting future billing cycles.

    Hello,

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/srb/sales/sales-service-commitments

In Business Central , the Next Billing Date is automatically updated when an invoice is generated - even if the invoice is later deleted (unposted). The system assumes the billing cycle has progressed, so it does not roll back automatically.

To fix this, you need to manually update the Next Billing Date on the subscription/contract line back to the correct date (e.g., 7/1 in your case). After correcting it, you can regenerate the invoice. As a best practice, always verify billing details before generating invoices, since deleting unposted invoices does not reverse the billing schedule progression.

    Hope this answer helps you!
