Why HR Tables in Custom Project / Why Fields Not Found?

The links above host images to aid in describing this situation. I have been given a chunk file which I have performed a Developer Update upon to get back to a "development" dictionary. This project contains definitions for a handful of HR tables. It also contains definitions that point to Payroll tables (different name, same physical name). In both cases these tables' definitions are in error as many field names are [NOT FOUND].

I had the crazy idea of doing a resource transfer in Dex Utils of the datatypes and fields from an HR dictionary to this development dictionary, however, that yielded no change.

Any ideas how I can reverse engineer this chunk file to a working development dictionary?

Original project version (I'm told): 9.00.0310

Current GP version client is on: 11.00.1752 - also do not know if the chunk was ever upgraded

Note: I do not have version 9 dictionaries so I am doing the Developer Update with 11.00.1752.

    Hi Chad,

I've sent you a PM with the link for the HR (414) .cnk file of GP  9.0.114 .

I've extracted the whole MSI folder from the DVD, which represent 781MB ... feel free to ask for any file of it..

Problem might be identification of the files, since the files are all in compressed archive format (kind of CAB file) on the DVD, and all have a unique identifier that only the setup program knows exactly what to pull from the file.. i..e. the HR module has at least 3 cnk files on the DVD, one for US, one for CA and one for International...

Would you be so kind as to provide a 9.0 HR dictionary?

    Hi Chad,

I was thinking about Payroll (PR) .. since in the Canadian Payroll it is a separate module and requires a specific dictionary, I thought that USPR would be too... but it doesn't look like to be the case (see mbs.microsoft.com/.../MDGP10_MSPVersionList.xls ). There was a new module I think added after GP10, called Payroll Integration to Payables (4522)... but that would not apply, since we're talking of 9.0 here...

HR is 414. However, Payroll is part of the main product. What third party product of you thinking of when you say "PR"?

sounds interesting.. and shows once more how dangerous custom development can be when it is uncontrolled and not well documented..  I remember a similar case years ago where I had to get back in touch with a former partner the company had ditched for bad practices and needed them to upgrade a custom dictionary to accommodate just the new release number.. They wanted to charge us for that, but I gave them some s****t as I told them that the company had fully paid for that dev and was actually the owner of the module.. they ended up dropping the invoice.

it could be that there is more than just the DYNAMICS.dic file involved in this dev.. maybe some other HR/PR dictionaries ? I could try extract them as well.. just need a # as reference.. (i.e HR should be 414, but I don't know for US PR).

The dictionary contains several forms. Two of which facilitate data exports to a text file, another does a transfer of what they refer to as their web orders to new batches, and another does a data import from a flat file. I am seeing code comments from 2001 so I do not know the original developer and am yet unfamiliar with the full spectrum of what the customization does or why it has alias tables for payroll and HR.

may sound as a dumb question.. but trying to understand the purpose of that dictionary : is it simply to store additional information for an employee ? why not use Extender from the builder series ?

I am still having the same trouble. I've included a screenshot of the original chunk file renamed as a DIC file and opened in Dexterity. There I can see the same Not Found problem on the tables.

Thank you, Mr. Bucher. I was writing a response at the same time you posted yours.
