Portal Front Side Editing not reliable

Posted on by 95

Hi All,

Is anyone else having a battle to get Portal Front Side Editing to work as advertised? Rarely, a simple text edit will work ok, but most of the time it doesn't, and an error is thrown like this:

D365-Portal-Front-Side-Edit-Error.png

The error ID seems to be randomly produced - it changes every time.

Any had this issue and been able to make it go away? We're on the latest portal version (9.1.2.22) and the portal solution is up to date.

This now seems to be fixed, thanks to help from MS Support.

In our case the admin account initially used to set-up the portal had been deactivated - and the errors were all to do with that account.

We found that reactivating the account made the Front Side Editing work again.

We also found that this old account was also the owner of the web page records that were failing, and that re-assigning the owner of the pages to an enabled portal admin also made the front side editing work again after we'd deactivated the old account again.

So - the portal seems to care who the owner of the records is - and throws errors if that owner is deactivated.

We were able to change the portal admin account from ‘Manage D365 Instance’in the Portal Admin centre – then Update Instance to choose the new admin account associated with our portal.

Tried clearing cache - makes no difference. Also tried enabling custom error logs and didn't find anything remotely useful in them.

How do I flag this issue up to MS Support?

    Hello,

As per my understanding if content is not updating immediately after change means it may be due to some Cache issues, why cant you use https://PortalURL/_services/about Url to clear cache and test it (this Url will work only if login user is Admin) and if you want to find out the exact error you are getting while saving data why cant you enable Custom errors from portal Actions and check it. To enable Custom Error Message please follow the link below.

    Thanks

    James

RE: Portal Front Side Editing not reliable

We're just trying to update page copy / content snippets via front side editing - which shows the content as editable. Everything works as expected right up to pressing 'save', and then the changes aren't saved as per the screenshot in the OP.

We're inviting our staff to update content - the easiest way for them to do this should be via front side editing. Any ideas why it isn't working? Editing pages via the back end is not feasible for non-technical staff.

I highly recommend not using the front-end editor

I suggest using CRM back end records for this.. I have seem several scenarios where the data gets in the limbo.. also it will help you understanding the data model of the portals

    Hi,

Can you please provide some more details what you are trying to do, if you are trying to refer some component, I will suggest you to refer it using some data property or other properties available instead of the GUID, you can look for possible properties using developer tools in browser.
