Good day Ian,
Would you be able to send me the links, we are busy struggling to find the RTM version Download as well?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Keith,
Fist I apologize if I sounded like I was coming from the 'software engineer' point of view. We don't want customers to send money on things they are not going to use, we would rather have you be happy (honestly). I was just meaning that the version of GP 10 you are on is quite old and there has been quite a bit of functionality introduced in GP 2010 and 2013. For example it sound like you have a lot of workstations that use GP. In GP 2013 you could look at getting Web Client setup.
Again I apologize if my response came off the wrong way. I completely understand the financial side of upgrading and adding new hardware!
Keith,
Thank you for your comments. Having been a dealer for several different accounting products (QuickBooks, Platinum, Macola, Solomon, MAS90, GP Dynamics, and Intacct) through the years, I've heard the arguments for and against upgrading a product. From the vendor side, products typically get upgraded for two reasons - to fix program bugs and add new functionality. Every vendor is competing with the other vendors in their market space for the same business. If one vendor has capabilities not offered by the others, it has an advantage in the marketplace. As new technologies emerge, the vendors try to incorporate hat new functionality into their products.
From the customer perspective, costs are involved in upgrading the software as well as the supporting architecture (hardware and software). And "Yes" they do disrupt the business processes. But if you didn't upgrade, at some point the vendor is not going to support the old software. Same for the workstation and server operating systems. And eventually the equipment will fail and need to be replaced. If you decided not to proceed with the upgrade, but instead replaced the software with another brand, that vendor is going to hand you a specification list of supported workstations, servers, and operating systems that would probably require you to make expenditures.
In any business, change is a given - whether it's new technology, increased competition, or an upturn/downturn in the economy. The only thing that you can do is work with partners that are have your best interests in mind and work closely with them to carefully plan the changes that take place in your organization.
I don't want to stir the pot, but one of the most sophisticated GP implementations I've ever seen was still on GP 9.0, and that was last year!
Jonathan,
There are a large number of reasons not to upgrade Great Plains. Most of them involve cost. It takes 60 hours to upgrade all the companies on the server at our installation and it takes 20 hours to upgrade all the clients. That is a major cost in time. There is also the cost of new equipment. We have been on Great Plains since version 8. One of the upgrades forced us to replace our server with new hardware and software and to replace all our clients with new hardware and software including a new version of the Microsoft Office suite. That was a major expense.
Each upgrade seems to be bigger and slower consuming more resources without adding much functionality. Sometimes an upgrade removes or changes a feature we came to rely on and we have to develop a work around to keep being productive. If there are changes in functionality then there is an additional cost in training time to get back up to production speed.
From the tone of your question it seems that you look at Great Plains from a software engineer's point of view and do not understand what real world production accounting work involves. The rest of us need to be cost effective and efficient. I am certain that I am not the only real world Great Plains user who sincerely dreads the idea of an upgrade.
We are upgrading to GP2013 in three months from GP2010.

Ian - thanks for helping out!
I think the best question here is why are you guys still on that low of a version?!? If you still need this please open a support case and ask for me. I can upload this to a FTP site for you but I would highly recommend upgrading to a newer version of GP or At least the latest update on GP 10.
I'm uploading ISOs of the GP 10 RTM DVDs to my site.
I'll PM download links when the upload is finished.
How soon do you need it Jim? I may have a GP10 Install CD at home but I'm out of town until Friday.
