Is The Use Of Analytical Accounting Recommended for FRx reporting

Posted on by 1,290

Dear All,

We are in need for special reports that recognize sales by regions and divisions, and by some other criteria. The suggested solution is to implement Analytical Accounting and use FRx to automate the reports that we need.

The problem that we are facing right now is that the consultant is not advising us to use AA claiming that it is not stable, and that only very few are satisfied with the results of AA. The consultant advised us to add more segments for each criteria that we need, actually, if I want to add the required segments, then I will end up with more hundreds of new accounts in the chart of accounts.

Do you share with our consultant the same ideas? Do you know if AA users are not satisfied when reporting with FRx?

Really appreciate your help.

Based on the new information, I think that I would move in the direction of additional segments.   Yes, you will have more accounts.   But in the long run it will make reporting lots easier, particularly in the built in GP reports like a trial balance.

You can use the mass modify feature to make creation of new accounts easier (hopefully).

You should check the Account Format window to confirm that you have segments available.   Depending on how the initial install was done, you may have up to 10 available.   Hopefully the install was done to allow for future growth.

    Dear All,

    Thank you for the input.

There are two points that I should point at here:

    A. Some of our sales are deferred in revenue recognition, and for this reason, using user defined field in SOP will not match our GL.

    B. We are a group of legal entities, the P&L statement should be extracted according to region, for example we may sell a particular region from two different legal entities, so the P&L statement that reflects our operation is based on a region, and department. We are also interested to get reports based on the sales amount for the products of a particular vendor, and how much did we spend for marketing and salling to accomplish these sales for that particular vendor.

If you have more suggestions, please add.

The biggest problem with AA is the fact that tagging a transaction with AA values requires opening of several other windows.   AA is stable, just a major hassel at times.

It does as you suggest, reduce the number of accounts needed versus adding segments in the account framework.

Managment Reporter (which we all move to at some point) does support AA nicely.

My question back to you is are all the sales done via the RM, SOP, Invoicing module?   If so then some additional tags there could provide you with the reporting you are looking for.   For example, if you are not using the salesperson function then you can tag a transaction with a salesperson id that can later be reported on.    Or if using SOP there are user defined fields available on the SOP document.   These are just a couple of simple examples and may or may not work depending on the complexity of your requirements.

While I can't speak for the flexibility of pulling Analytical Accounting (AA) data into FRX or Management Reporter, I do know that many of our clients use it for tracking the diminsions their organizations need.

I would probably recommend general ledger segments for region and division but what are the "other criteria" mentioned?  Sometimes these unknowns can be the deciding factors.
