PARENT TO CHILDREN

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello,

I have been searching for an answer to our problem for over a year and still have not come up with an acceptable solution so I have decided to ask for help.  Currently we are on GP2015, we use multiple bins, and lot track these items.  We are a manufacturer and some of the items we produce have to be converted to other items.

To simplify, lets say that we produce and sell a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood (parent item).  I also cut this sheet down into smaller sizes and sell them that way (children).  The children are sizes 1 x 4, 2 x 4, and 5 x 4.  So item A.(4 x 8), item B (1 x 4), item C (2 x 4), and item D (5 X 4) are all unique item numbers and are lot tracked.  Lastly, I need to be able to issue the parent to the process so my people would know which lot numbers to cut down.

I need  a process that will allow me to take item A and generate 3 different items from it.    Inventory Assembly won't work because it does not allow bins.

If there was something like a Manufacturing Order that would allow me to receive in different items instead of the item the Manufacturing order was created for, that would be the perfect answer.  Does anyone know of an add-on or modifier that would do what I need.

Any assistance or comments would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Larry

    RE: PARENT TO CHILDREN

    Hi Tim,

thanks for responding....sorry to make it so complicated.

The plywood parent is both a make and buy item.

I tried using the parent as a component of a bom for a child and consume it but the bill of materials would be for only one child and I would produce 3 children.  Two of which are not on the bom. EX: bom for 5x4 component would have 4 x 8 (parent) as component.  The 2x4 and 1x4 would not be produced in the process.

The exact issue is that I can't make three different unique items with an Manufacturing Order by consuming the parent while still maintain Bins and tracking lots.  At least I have not figured out a method.

I am kind of trying to do the reverse of a MO.  Instead of making one item I need to make 3 items....each a differt item number.

    Hope this helps explain.  Thanks

I'm trying to extract your question from the word...

Is the plywood parent item a raw material and a finished goods?

Can you use the parent item as a component in a bill of materials and consume it?

Is the problem that the bill of materials is dynamic depending on needs. I am trying to work out where your exact issues are...
