connecting excel to dynamics gp

Hello. I've been trying to figure out how to connect excel to our dynamics gp database. From what I've read this seems possible, but I don't want to cause any problems trying to set this up. Can anyone give me the steps I can follow to do this? The reason I'm trying to do this is to have reports in excel I've created to automatically update without spending too much time to do this. Thanks!

    Without knowing what version of GP you are on, or if you have the Smartlist / Excel Builder tool available in GP, this would be the best way to achieve what you need since all of the tables and fields will reference the friendly named version.

    If you are not familiar with the GP naming convention or the 1700+ tables available, this might scare you off a bit using Excel to connect directly to the SQL database.

    If you are comfortable with all this, Mahmoud's example will get you connected assuming you have the proper SQL privileges on your user security setup.

    Of course you could connect your Excel to database. Please follow the following steps;

    • On your Excel Sheet, Go to the Data tab. (Get External Data Section) From other Sources > From SQL server
    • Enter the Server name and the credentials
    • Select the Database that contains the data you need
    • Connect to a specific table/ view
    • Finish

    The data will be retrieved and shown in your excel sheet.

    Your feedback is highly appreciated in order to dig for further details if required.
