Does CRM Mobile App need Public IFD?

Posted on by 410

I have seen a lot of questions around the requirements for CRM for Mobile, but none quite answer my scenario.  I have CRM2016 On Prem. Claims and IFD are setup correctly so that orgname.domain.com brings me to the IFD forms authentication, and crm.domain.com brings me to the internal windows authentication, however IFD does not have a public IP. Users accessing CRM must be on VPN (we have VPN working on phones/tablets/pcs). Do I need the Public access to use the CRM Mobile for Phones app? Can anyone point to a Microsoft article stating that the public access is a requirement. All I can find is that IFD needs to be setup and available, which connected to the VPN it is.

    Hi,

I don't know Airwatch but it looks like the solutions we use for deploying & managing iOS applications.  As long as it launches a VPN on the iPhone when you start the Dynamics 365 iOS application it will be fine.

Once you are on your corporate  LAN you will be able to get to the CRM via Safari using the usual http URL.  You need to configure CRM IFD because the iPhone/iPad native applications only accept https URLs in the initial configuration screen - and of course your corporate IS security officer will be extra happy when you run the CRM on https over the LAN too!

    Hi Chibby,

My company has just upgraded to CRM 2016 and we use Airwatch.  Will using the method you describe enable compatibility with Airwatch so that the reps in the field can access the app?

    Hi,

A public facing IP is not required.

We have IFD configured on-premises only on our LAN.  Users need to first connect to their mobile VPN to then hit the CRM URL and login with ADFS the normal way.

    Hi Joshua,

The public facing IP is a deal breaker for us so I'm trying to confirm that's it's not required so I can convince our team it's worth investigating. We have Cisco AnyConnect, AirWatch and Apogee but I must confess, I'm not sure which we'd be pursuing and why. But if a Public Facing IP is required, there may be no reason for me to find out!

    Thanks,

The setup of the mobile apps are a good resource, but I have read the technet requirements for the mobile app and as stated in my OP I do have IFD set up and working correctly. It doesn't state that a public facing IP needs to be setup for the mobile app however. I am running into issues with the WP10 app crashing during authentication and am trying to determine what the issue is.

    Hi Joshua,

    Please refer the following articles:

    IFD Related setting:

For CRM for phones and CRM for tablets, Microsoft Dynamics CRM on-premises deployments require Internet-facing deployment (IFD) for users to access their data. If you have your Microsoft Dynamics CRM website available over the internet but it is not using the Microsoft Dynamics CRM IFD configuration, it is not supported. To verify that your on-premises deployment is configured for IFD, open Microsoft Dynamics CRM Deployment Manager on your Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server. The Authentication Summary section should show that both Claims-Based Authentication and Internet-facing deployment (IFD) are enabled.. source: technet.microsoft.com/.../dn531128.aspx
