401klf set up in payroll before being set up in HR

In error an employee was set up with 401k deduction and not HR first - rolling down to payroll.  Payrolls have been processed before this was caught.  Cannot add the benefit now in HR for the employee - getting message run Update benfit signup in Reconcile Human Resources.  This does not work.  Any suggestions?
