Subcontracting

I was installing and configuring the Subcontracting extension in one of my customer's environments today.

I discovered an issue where, once the Subcontracting extension was installed, I was unable to select a vendor in the Subcontractor field on my work center card. When I tab out of the field after selecting the vendor, the value does not remain and the field stays blank.

I have followed the setup instructions below and configured a location code on the relevant vendor:

Am I missing something, or is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

If I uninstall the Subcontracting extension, I can successfully validate and save a vendor in the subcontractor field on the work center card.

I then tried to verify this behavior in my own Contoso/Cronus test environment, but encountered a different and more fundamental issue.

After downloading and installing the extension, the Manufacturing Setup page is not extended with the Subcontracting fast tab. The same applies to the Vendor Card, no expected extended fields shows. It is as if the extension is installed, but nothing has actually happened. See the attached screenshots. I have logged out and in again, the issue remains.

However, this did not happen in my customer's environment I was referring to in the top of this message. There, the extension gets installed correctly and the additional fields  appear as expected. My issue in that environment is specifically that I cannot configure the work center card because the subcontractor vendor cannot be assigned.

Has anyone else experienced either of these issues with the Subcontracting extension?

Version of the extension is 28.4.53241.53726 in both scenarios.

Both my and my customers environments are BC 28.4 with Swedish localization.

Hi, This appears to be a standard issue. I recommend submitting it to the Business Central Viva Engage community, where Microsoft engineers can provide you with better insights.

    Hello,

I think you are seeing two separate issues. For your own CRONUS/Contoso environment, first check Company Information → User Experience → Experience and make sure it is set to Premium. Microsoft states that Manufacturing functionality is available only with the Premium experience, and the current Subcontracting documentation assumes Premium. After installing the Subcontracting app, Manufacturing Setup should contain the Subcontracting FastTab, and the Vendor Card should expose Subcontracting Location Code. If the company is already Premium and those controls are still missing, then I would treat that as an extension installation/initialization issue and test reinstalling the Microsoft Subcontracting app in that test environment.

For the customer environment, what you describe is not expected behavior. Microsoft specifically documents that entering Subcontractor No. on the Work Center should link the vendor to that work center automatically, provided the vendor has a valid Subcontracting Location Code. Also verify that the subcontracting location doesn't use unsupported warehouse handling such as bins, picks, or put-aways. If the vendor can be selected but the value is silently cleared when leaving the field, I would reproduce it in a clean sandbox with Microsoft-only extensions. There were already several Subcontracting fixes in 28.4, and Microsoft has released further Subcontracting fixes in 28.5, although I couldn't find this exact Work Center validation issue documented as a specific hotfix. Therefore, I would definitely retest on 28.5 before implementing any workaround. If it still reproduces there with Premium experience and Microsoft-only apps, I would raise it to Microsoft with the exact vendor, location, Work Center setup, and AL call stack/event recorder output.

First, I do not have the “Subcontracting” Extension installed in my environment, recently updated to version 28.5:

The Subcontractor field exists on the Work Center and the Subcontracting Worksheet exists in my environment.  I haven't gone through and tested the other “new” features of the Extension.

In order to add a Location to a Work Center, the Bin Mandatory flag must be set at that Location.  Perhaps this is what is causing your issues?

I would recommend you uninstall the Subcontracting Extension and try setting it up using the basic features of Business Central Manufacturing, which does require your environment is set to Premium in Company Information.

    Best Regards,

Thank you all for your comments.

Regarding my sandbox, I have the premium experience enabled and I have tried to uninstall and install again multiple times, everytime with the same behavior.

Yun, I have applied for access to that Viva community, unfortuneately it says it can take up to 2 weeks to be let in.

In the customer's env we have kind of work around. That is to set up the work centers with a a vendor in the subcontractor field of the work center prior to install the subcontracting extension.

I will also make a sandbox copy of that environment and uninstall all extensions <>Microsoft like you proposed Oussama,
