For future - it was not clear from your initial question what changes are you looking for. If you want to get "good" answer try to describe your issues or requirements in detail ;)
I would recommend looking for one of the autonumber tools out there, and not to write your own.
JS isn't reliable, because you HAVE to assume every case will be opened by a person, and not created by a process, or a "convert to Case" from a phone call or email.
Plus, if you don't make sure to use record locking, Cases created at the same time can get the same number from your autonumber plugin.

You would have to use auto-number Plugin, if you do not want the OOB format.

You can configure it using OOB functionality - CRM -> Settings -> Administration -> Auto-Numbering -> Cases Tab.
