I need to create a refreshable excel report for a list of active customers through Smartlist. Is it possible

That would be a very simple solution. Going into SmartList each time and running the SL would accomplish the same thing. You can save your SL as a Favorite.
So, i need to set up an SQL View and then connect to a datasource in excel
All reports you generate though SmartList are refreshable. Do you mean you want it to refresh automatically? I would set up a SQL view and then use Excel using an external data source so every time you click refresh you would get the most recent copy.
