Extension vs. Customization – When to Use Which in D365 F&O?

Hi all,

In D365 F&O, most cases recommend extensions, but sometimes we still need over-layering or custom classes.
 
Can someone explain real-world scenarios where:
 
* Extension is mandatory
* Extension is not enough
* Customisation becomes necessary
 
Examples related to forms, tables, RDP reports, or data entities would be very helpful.
