As you might have some customizations in this area, there was a suggestion above to ask help from a developer. Have you contacted someone within your organization or partner?

Were you able to find the culprit? Do you need some additional assistance from us?
As ludwig suggested, Just check with your developer about customization that have been done on status field to allow manually change the "Approval status" is causing this issue or not.

Can you please share, Why are you changing the approval status manually? As Andre also mentioned, it should be changed by workflow engine automatically.
One more thing, once you submit the WF, the approval status should be changed to "In review" status not "In draft". Please check your WF configuration.

Do you have a customization here? The Approval status field is not editable in my standard environment. It should be controlled by the workflow steps.
