CRM 2013 to 2016 upgrade multiple-server deployment | EVERY server to 2015 first?

Posted on by 190

Multiple server deployment is a supported configuration. Naturally.
2013 to 2016 must first go via 2015. Understood.
Question is, in multiple-server deployments when following in-place upgrade approach (I know, not my recommendation either), must every server in the deployment be upgraded to 2015 first or just the server carrying the Deployment Server role?
Our topology is:
1 x Deployment Server role
2 x Web front end
3 x back end
1 x SSRS
1 x SQL Server (primary node, AlwaysOn cluster to other 3 SQL Server nodes)
all x 2: one topology at primary site and one at DR.

Appreciate the wisdom from those that have gone through it.
Many thanks

What way you got it done?

    I think of two approach:

    1. Uninstall 2013 from all servers -> Install 2015 on any of server -> Get org upgraded to 2015 compatible from Depl Mngr -> Take DB Backup -> Uninstall 2015 -> Install 2016 step by step on all servers-> Import Org from Depl Mngr

    2. Do in-place upgrade from all servers starting with FrontEnds one by one without selecting Org to Upgrade first - Upgrade Org later from Depl Mngr.
