Posting Groups vs Dimensions

Before we proceed with the set up of our company, I want to make sure I understand the difference between Posting Groups and Dimensions and understand pros & cons of each.

Where is the best place that I can read about each of these features?

We currently use GP and utilize Report Writer (but do not use dimension in RW).

    Hello,

Here is the documentation on each.

    docs.microsoft.com/.../finance-dimensions

    docs.microsoft.com/.../finance-posting-groups

If you're coming from GP you can think of Dimensions sort of like Financials version of Analytical Accounting.

Posting Groups on the other hand are a way to automatically map entities like customers, vendors, items, and sales and purchase orders to GL accounts.

    Thanks,

    Chris

In addition to what Chris has shared about Dimensions vs Posting Groups, as someone new to Dynamics 365 for Financials, you will benefit from these two videos on Posting Groups and Posting Setups:

    • 3 part video on Posting Groups:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDedEU9bDh8&index=2&list=PLKINeAh6J4zaGcHuvr2UfxsKJXkBUdY8L

    •  Another video on Posting Groups:

Even though these videos are titled for "Dynamics NAV", these are also applicable for Dynamics 365 for Financials. This is an area where the functionality is near identical between the two systems (there may be a few more accounts that can be defined in NAV than 365 for Financials).

I hope this helps. If my response has answered your question, please verify by clicking Yes next to "Did this answer your question?"

    Hi All,

This is all very helpful information

I have used the posting groups to reflect the financial impact when creating an sales or purchase invoice, or doing inventory transactions, and that all makes sense to me and works perfectly fine

but there are some areas where I don't understand the usage of posting groups and how it affects the transaction

1- The chart of account - in the account Definition or when creating a new account, you can link it to a posting group on the account card.  What does that mean?

2- In the Journals, again I see that there are posting groups used.  For example, If I select in the Journal one side as an expense account and the other side as the vendor.  Then the payable account will come from the posting group linked to the vendor and the expense side will come from the expense account I selected.  Where does the posting group in the Journals come in play and change the accounting and what is the purpose behind it in the General Journals, or payable , or Receivable Journals ?

    Thanks

    Ola
