The Distinction Between the Word Template and Report Writer

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello:

A GP 2015 end user needs to have Ship To Address information added to the SOP Blank Invoice Form in Report Writer.

Now, they are emphatic about saying that they need this done, specifically, in Report Writer.  They say that that is where the report comes from.

But, whenever they have printed sales invoices, the invoices have generated in Word Template format.

So, if I add the Ship To Address ID fields in Report Writer, will that data automatically show up when generated in Word?

I did take a look at the different modified sales invoice Word Templates they have in Template Maintenance.  The Ship To fields are on the templates.  They are simply not in Report Writer.

I'm just looking to know whether to modify Report Writer or Word Templates.  (It sounds like I need to use Report Writer.)

The client did say that the Ship To fields were there, at one time, but they removed them.

By the way, if I ever do have to modify a Word Template in Report Maintenance, how do I know which modified template to use when several are listed?

Thank you!

John

Boy, that's a loaded question. Let's go by parts.

"A GP 2015 end user needs to have Ship To Address information added to the SOP Blank Invoice Form in Report Writer. Now, they are emphatic about saying that they need this done, specifically, in Report Writer.  They say that that is where the report comes from".

The Ship To Address information has always been part of the original Report Writer report. If you would like it back, it's probably easier to remove (delete) the current modified version of the report and re-add the original one. I strongly recommend you export the current customized version as a package file (from the Customization Maintenance window) before you remove it.

That depends. Typically, you would want to print the customized version of the report (including the Ship To Address fields) to an XML report definition file. In turn, you can import this XML file to use as the basis for your template. Any field you need needs to be added in Report Writer before you generate your XML report definition file.

Take a look at which ones are assigned to what companies and customers, then ask around why?
