Hello community, I'm having a hard time understanding Multiplexing and device licensing, even when reading the available documentation by Microsoft.
I have read the following documents
- download.microsoft.com/.../Dynamics 365 Business Central Licensing Guide - May 2020.pdf
- download.microsoft.com/.../multiplexing.pdf
- docs.microsoft.com/.../ui-how-users-permissions
And previous threads
- community.dynamics.com/.../1052798
- community.dynamics.com/.../986940
Assuming the following setup:
[custom mobile app] --> [custom server] -- (authenticate using webservice user/key) --> [Business Central API]
There are 3 users:
SERVICE.USER (Essential License)
WAREHOUSE1 (Member of device users group)
WAREHOUSE2 (Member of device users group)
The webservice key of SERVICE.USER is used by the server to authenticate in the Business Central API.
For simplicity assume only a single device is used. On this device users WAREHOUSE1 and WAREHOUSE2 can log in using their internal account (on the customer server, not Microsoft accounts in BC).
SCENARIO: User WAREHOUSE1 logs in (internally on our server) and request a list of receipts assigned to him. The custom server software requests this list using the Business Central API authenticating as SERVICE.USER.
Questions:
1. Is it sufficient in the above scenario to have a single device license (next to the Essential license for SERVICE.USER)?
2. Is it legal to use the same credentials (of SERVICE.USER) when requesting data related to users WAREHOUSE1 and WAREHOUSE2 (like assigned receipts)?
3. Would it be better (and possible) to actually authenticate as WAREHOUSE1 or WAREHOUSE2 when making API requests to Business Central?
