Data migration strategy from GP to BC

Hi there,

(First of all, thank you for seeing this question, and I appreciate your support fully)

I am working on migrating to Business Central from Dynamics GP. I want to consult with you about the general migration process from GP to BC in your opinion.

For example, do you typically use the "Cloud Migration" to migrate the on-premise GP data to cloud BC? I have been configuring and running the "Cloud Migration". So there are quite a few entries in the "Cloud Migration Management" page, but I cannot trigger "Run migration now"  because it will tell me "Cannot start a new migration until the previous migration run and additional/posting processes have completed." I have also tried "Disable Cloud Migration", but it does not seem to be in effect. And there is no specific explanations about the detail of migration error. I also notice that the cloud migration is getting slower and slower as I configured and ran more cloud migration.

Anyway, the above is basically saying I am losing my faith on this "Cloud Migration" thing in BC. If you can shed some light or share with your experience and direction for me, that will be helpful.

** Another thing I want to run by you is this: the more I understand about BC, I feel that I should treat this as a new implementation. I mean, I can migrate the master data over (or possibly some transactional data over), but due to some fundamental difference between GP and BC, I should treat this BC as a new implementation.

Many thanks

Jamie

This is absolutely correct. Even if you migrate all your master data and opening balances, you should still consider this a fresh implementation.

Regarding the cloud migration setup, if your data volume is not very high and you don’t have to deal with too many areas in Business Central, you can migrate the data manually using configuration packages.

I’ve done two migrations—one of them using this manual method—and it was very simple for me.

    Hi,

This issue occurs when you are using old environment where some data is already present.

Please follow below step and it will solve your issue

    1. Please create new fresh BC sandbox environment according to your requirement.
    2. Go to "My company" and run Cloud migration setup
    3. Go to cloud migration management and make sure there is only one step available> cloud migration setup is completed.
    4. Now, "Run data replication" and then Wait until status=completed.(See below last SS)
    5. Run data upgrade and then wait until Status=completed. (See below last SS)
    6. Now, check data in system by opening "Table information" page and then Disable cloud migration.(See below last SS)

I hope this will work, please let me know if you have any further doubts.

    Thanks,
    Sagar Dangar

Hi, It is recommended that you submit your post to the newly created BC Yammer Group below, where Microsoft technicians and GP experts will give you better advice.
