Manufacturing - is there a way to close at month end

Posted on by 1,970

Does anyone know if there is a way to close Manufacturing at the end of the month so users cannot backdate transactions to a previous period? Or so we can close a future period so we can make sure that all transactions from the previous period are done before new month's transactions are done. We are on GP 2010.

Thanks.

i see the problem now. we had transaction entry unchecked because we were doing some last minute variance entries manually in the inventory transaction entry screen. going through it in our test company, if that is unchecked (using the mass close button) manufacturing allows transactions to post even though everything else in the inventory series is checked (closed). thanks!

    Sharon,

When you close the inventory for a specific period, no receipts can be entered for a manufacturing order for that period.  It is based off the receipt date, so if April is closed for manufacturing and my receipt is for April a dialog pops up like this:

"The Fiscal Period that contains this date is closed"

The same thing happens with closing the manufacturing order, as soon as I type in the date of a fiscal period that is closed i get a pop up saying the fiscal period that contains this date is closed.

So, your users won't be able to close MO's or do an MO receipt as long as the inventory series is closed for the month you don't want them to close in.  This will not affect anything, as it prevents them completely from even being able to save the receipt or close the order.

i'm looking to stop users from doing any transaction that could have an affect on inventory and/or the G/L, so issuing material and closing MOs are the two biggest concerns for previous months and issuing material, creating a receipt for finished good, as well as closing MOs in the current month is also of concern. even when i close inventory, it doesn't stop the transaction from happening. and i can't close the financial series completely until the month is completely closed. and closing the financial series would only prevent the g/l side from posting which will potentially cause variances.

    Sharon,

Can you be more specific on what transactions you want to prevent users from back or forward dating?

As far as I know, manufacturing does not have it's own fiscal period closing in GP - manufacturing is tightly integrated with inventory and the GL.

So, if you close the prior month in Fiscal Period Setup for the Financial and for Inventory (and also the future month), then they would not be able to post transactions to that.

To close fiscal periods click on Microsoft Dynamics Gp --> Tools --> Setup --> Company --> Fiscal Periods.  From here you can specify which series and months to open and close.
