Master-Details pattern in Dynamics CRM

Posted on by 805

Hi,

I saw there are many questions about Master-Details behavior in Dynamics CRM. I saw many explanation regarding the Master-Details visualization. But I didn't find any for Master-Details input in a single form. I mean classical master-details pattern (header-lines). So my question is: Is it possible to be entered master-details data at the same time in a single form out of the box?

For instance: User enters data for the master record first, then enter data for all details records (as if the form has two related data sources).

Regards,

    Hi Jaret,

This is an expected behaviour. In Dynamics CRM (365), you need to create the parent record first before you can create/associate child records. You can't create Parent & Child at the same time.

    Hope this helps.

In the classical master-details pattern, we have two (related) data sources on the same form which have two separate CRUD operations. So we create master record first, save it and then the details records are created. There are validations, so we couldn't create details records if master record is missing.

If we are talking a grid of an associated entity, no.  That's kind of an MSCRM database non sequitur.  Detail records need a foreign key and no such identifier exists before the master is created.  Then, the updates are to separate records.  Where do you see discussion of Master-Details behavior in Dynamics CRM?
