Dynamics 365 Outlook App vs Outlook add-on

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I would have a question. I have an Outlook add-on for CRM and I also use the Outlook Web App (OVA). when I track in OVA, I see in Outlook that the email is being tracked. When I track in Outlook. I can not see in OVA info about tracking. is it ok or not?

RE: Dynamics 365 Outlook App vs Outlook add-on

    Hello.

In Dynamics 365 we have two different integrations with Outlook and comparison between them was mentioned by Goutam.

    1. Dynamics 365 App for Outlook (MailApp) which you deploy using deployment page in CRM, it is cross platform and appears on outlook and in browsers

    2. Dynamics 365 for Outlook (COM Add-In) which you install using MSI and it appears only in Outlook for Windows.

It is just to clear naming and confusion in your question, you probably talking about first one with the same UI in Outlook and in OWA (Outlook Web Application) which you open by clicking on "D" button.

Anyway behavior will be the same. You most likely use Exchange Cached mode, which means that changes made locally will not go to the server immediately.

Outlook has a process how they synchronize the changes made locally to the server. In Outlook status bar you should see "Updating this folder" or something similar periodically which means that they do synchronization at that moment.

After this synchronization you will see changes made in Outlook reflected in OWA (Outlook Web Application)

I believe you observed this when track the email or appointment while composing (just created or changing) it.

After you tracked such kind of the email or appointment in Outlook you should save it and close the form. Then Outlook should kicks a sync and changes will be reflected on the OWA (Outlook Web Application)

In case if you tried to track received email or appointment it should be immediately shown as Tracked in OWA (Outlook Web Application)
