Why is a terminal server required for SL 2015? Or is it? What are the benefits/requirements?

Terminal server is not a requirement to run SL clients. It is a recommended setup option when the SL clients are remote from the server hosting the databases. Connections between the SL clients and the SQL DB are much faster when on the same local LAN segment.
Other setup options are available for where to install the clients. Performance is the main determining factor of the preferred client setup, and location of the components is one of several factors affecting performance.
