RMS > Bringing It Up-to-date

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi Guys

Looking at bringing an RMS installation up-to-date.
Current Version RMS 2.0.0155 Running on XP Pro with MSDE 2005.
A one store with one register installation.

1> Should I move to Windows 7.0, if yes what version 32 or 64 bit? or is staying with XP Pro okay?
2> If staying with Win XP Pro should I upgrade my SQL Server Express 2005 & to what version? Any special instructions on doing this available?
If moving to Windows 7 should I upgrade my SQL Server Express 2005 & to what version (32 or 64)?
3> My understanding is that I need to install Feature Pack 2 (FP2), and then all the Hotfix's #32 all the way to Hotfix #37 (they are not cumulative which will bring me to build 2.0.1006.) Is this correct?
4> Any other words of advice would be appreciated? Is 2.1006 the best version to have as a final build?

Thanks

Danny

RE: RMS > Bringing It Up-to-date

Assume a new fresh Win7 install we prefer 64b but make sure you 64b drivers for your printers, scanners, etc

If using OPOS drivers for any device, install those first

Install SQL 2008 R2 Express using my install notes from the Forum; www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx  Be sure to pick the x86 for 32b  x64 for 64b

Install the SQL 2008 2005 Backward Components (SQLServer2005_BC.msi); www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=27596  Be sure to pick the x86 for 32b  x64 for 64b

Install the RMS from the 2.0 download from CustomerSource, skipping over the SQL install portion. mbs.microsoft.com/.../rms20install.htm

    Install 2.0.150 FP1 mbs.microsoft.com/.../rms-20-fp1.htm

    Install 2.0.155 SP4 mbs.microsoft.com/.../rms-20-sp4.htm

    Install 2.0.1000 FP2 mbs.microsoft.com/.../rms-20-fp2.htm

Install the latest hotfix, 2.0.1006 mbs.microsoft.com/.../20sphf-v2.htm

Create a new database using your backup as the source.  Make sure to change the database growth to 20mb.  Setup your SQL per my previous postings

Either turn off the UAC or rename the manifest files in the RMS folder to manifest.old

    Going to lunch!!

    Hello Danny,

Hot-Fixes are cumulative. You dont need to install each one, just go with the latest one and it will include 32-37.

    Thanks

    Thank-you

Yes I am definitely moving from XP to Windows 7 Pro and will be doing a fresh install and restore and upgrade databases as required.

Are hot fixes cumulative? After installing FP2 do I need to install each hot Fix 32 - 37 or can I only install the latest hot fix 37 and it will contain all others?

    Thanks

    Danny

    Hi guys,

For clarification, I know that XP won’t be supported next year, has Microsoft also confirmed that they will no longer support RMS running on XP?

    Thank you very much.

Understand though that there is no upgrade path from XP to Win 7/8.  You need to erase and re-install programs or use an add-on like PC Mover or PickMeApp. Microsoft offer a files and settings option called Windows Easy Transfer.

Like Brian said though, it the  machine is 4 years old or older, replace the machine, transfer your file and install the programs.

Yes update to Windows 7 as XP is End of Support in April.

I would choose 64bit, as long as all the hardware as supporting drivers.

SQL should be upgraded to at least 2008R2 Express

Yes FP2, then the .1006 hotfix.

I do wonder how old your hardware is though, if more than 4 years old may not be worth it.
