Weird error: all CRM records reassigned from one user to another after IE hangs

Hi wonder if anyone has ever come across this error.  One of my users was reassigning his lead record to another user (call her N) when IE hung halfway through.  After restarting IE, all his records (leads, opportunites, accounts, notes EVERYTHING) was reassigned to that user N.

We don't have audit turned on as it eats up too much resources, so I can't track any history.  But has anybody come across something like this before, and knows what happened?   Please help!

    I'm using CRM2013 online, and you're exactly right! because for all those records, the "modifiedby" was "System".  it also explains why IE crashed or rather froze.
