Adding additional server into On Premise environment

We are on version 8.1.0.359 and have a planned upgrade to latest V9. I am prepping for upgrade and we want to add another server into our environment. The 8.1.0.359 version is an update and not cumulative. When I try and install Base v8 first the MSCRM_Config db already exists and the process errors out. I am looking to see if anyone has the process for adding an additional server into this type of environment.

What is your current setup for 8.1 (Full servers, BE Servers, FE, servers, etc,)? Do you plan to have a separate v9 environment or thought of that option?
