Dynamics CRM Upgrade

Posted on by

Hello,

My company has been without a MS Partner for about 2 years now. We are scheduled to upgrade to Dynamics 365 in July and August. We have some questions regarding the upgrade as well as the new licensing structure.

A few of our questions are:

Is there someone at Microsoft that can guide us through this upgrade process vs. using a Microsoft Partner?

Is it mandatory to upgrade to Dynamics 365 if we are currently using Dynamics CRM online?

What will happen if we don't approve our update?

Is there a way we can reschedule our upgrade for a later date?

If it is mandatory to upgrade to Dynamics 365, is it possible to maintain our current license structure vs. transitioning to the new role based license structure?

Any guidance with this will be helpful.

Thanks,

Jennifer Swanberg

  • RE: Dynamics CRM Upgrade

    Hi Aiden,

We were upgrading from 2015. We are online, so we have been upgrading to the most recent version each time one is released. We didn't have our partner run the code validator tool for the upgrade to 2016 and quickly realized after the upgrade that we should have.

I have spoken to MS Support Engineers but cannot seem to get a straight answer on if the code validator tool will catch all of our deprecated code. One engineer said that we can contact them for support to fix and it and another one told us that we have to get our code updated by our partner to the most recent version of CRM first. I'm not even sure what that means (getting our code updated to the most recent version of CRM). Because I'm not technically savvy, I'm not sure what the effort should be in doing this.

Thank you so much for helping me!

    Hi Jenn,

What were you upgrading from before 2016? If your partner was using supported methods then it shouldn't have been that big a lift (although depending on how old your version was, they may have done everything right and it was deprecated eventually).

The custom code validator is good and should flag any issues. I don't know if anything client-side was deprecated between 2015 and Dynamics 365 so the 2015 version will still pick up anything written incorrectly. I suppose you might get some false positives if you get errors on methods introduced in 2016 but I don't know if that will actually happen.

If you need a hand with some of the more technical items, I'd be happy to talk about it in more detail.

    Thanks,

     Aiden

Thanks for your reply Aiden! That is good to hear that the upgrade should not impact much. However, we do have quite a bit of custom j-script in our system. The upgrade to 2016 Update 1 had a heavy impact on our custom code. We reached out to MS tech support and they suggested we contact our partner to have the code updated to the most current version of CRM. Our partner replied that because the Custom Code Validator Tool was built for an earlier version of CRM (2015) it is not capable of capturing all our deprecated code. However, MS suggests that anyone with custom code use the tool to do just that, for version 2016 Update 1 and for Dynamics 365.

I am not in capable of reading or writing j-script so I am completely lost on this subject.

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hi Jennifer,

The Dynamics 365 update is coming - you can put if off for a while but at some point they'll force you to upgrade. You should be able to configure the timing in your Office 365 Admin panel or the CRM instance picker screen, I'm not sure which off the top of my head.

The good news is that the update from CRM Online to Dynamics 365 will be almost unnoticeable - the only real difference is the name and some new features. There are a lot of really cool updates coming though, so I'd suggesting getting on board because the LinkedIn integration looks really neat.

If you want to remain independent from a partner, you should be able get details from Microsoft related to pricing and the license details. My experience with Microsoft user support has been fantastic lately so I'd definitely go that route first (www.microsoft.com/.../contact-us).

Let me know if you have any specific questions or need a hand with anything - you can message me here or LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/.../aidenkaskela

Hope this helps! I'd appreciate if you'd mark this as Answering your question.

    Thanks,

     Aiden
